Here’s Aretha Franklin in 1970 singing a live version of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song, I Say a Little Prayer: This is Aretha’s studio version, which has a bit faster tempo:The song was originally written in 1966 for Dionne Warwick — here’s her original 1967 studio recording of the song:Burt Bacharach, who grew up in New York and studied music at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, recorded multiple versions of the song with Warwick but felt it sounded rushed, so initially didn’t release it. But when it was later released as the B-side to Warwick’s single, (Theme from) Valley of the Dolls, it became a Top 10 hit. I Say a Little Prayer was supposed to covey a young woman’s love for a man who was away in the Vietnam war.
