New Desigual bags at Angel: Spring-Summer 2018

Angel has more than a dozen new Desigual bags from the Spring-Summer 2018 collection, including this reversible shopper called Lola Pacth Capri. It’s a 3-in-1 bag with a smaller bag inside (with a cherries print). It also has a cherries keychain. $149.95.

Angel has lots of new bags from Desigual’s Spring-Summer 2018 collection. Some are tropical, some have red lips and others have embroidered hearts and bluebirds. Some are also reversible bags, with a second bag that fits inside. There are backpacks, shopper-style bags, messenger bags and everything in between. And the prices are affordable. We believe the bags below, which arrived this week, are some of the best that Desigual has produced since it first started in Spain in 1984:

This weekend, the Canadian music awards (called the Junos) are being held in Vancouver. Angel supports Canadian music and musicians but sometimes I’m amazed that I’ve never heard of a Canadian group such as this one – I recently stumbled upon this band from Saskatchewan, The Dead South, and was surprised to learn that this two-year-old video has more than 50 million hits on YouTube:

There was a nice piece in the New York Times today about Canadian singer-songwriter k.d. lang, who played her first Vancouver concert at The Savoy, the now-defunct nightclub that was located above my store (now The Diamond) in Gastown. I was amazed to witness k.d that night (a video from those early days in here). She was the craziest country performer I’d ever seen, with her cut-off cowboy boots, glasses and her swearing that she was the reincarnation of Patsy Cline, who died the day k.d. was born. I later watched her sign her first record contract (aboard a paddlewheeler named The Beaver that was cruising Vancouver’s harbour). She now splits her time living in Calgary and Portland. And finally, here’s my favourite video of former Vancouver drummer Charlie Quintana, who died suddenly this week in Cancun, Mexico. His Mexican punk band was chosen by Bob Dylan to make his first appearance in 1984 on the David Letterman show – a killer version of Jokerman, where Dylan can’t find his harmonica in the right key and leaves the stage, telling the band to keep playing until he can locate it. Charlie flashes an amused smile at his bandmates when they realize they’ve been left alone on stage, playing Letterman. But better yet, ignore the bad video and sound, but enjoy the fact The Plugz got to do this Roy Head song, Treat Her Right, during the Letterman rehearsal:

New Arrivals: Desigual for kids, Spring-Summer 2018

Desigual’s Spring-Summer 2018 collection for kids has arrved at Angel. The Barcelona-based clothing line has teamed up with Disney and Marvel to produce a number of pop images for the little ones, including Star Wars, The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and other superheroes, sometimes on the same shirt.

Using reversible sequins, one of the T-shirts for boys features the Hulk, but when the sequins are reversed by brushing your hand across them, the image changes to Captain America. There’s also another T-shirt featuring a big-mouth hamburger that has a blackboard in the mouth which your child can make his or her own images using chalk, which simply washes out in the laundry, ready for the next creative idea.

For boys, Angel has chosen a cowboy/western theme, which utilizes cattle skulls, neck kerchiefs printed on shirts and some iconic imagery of the Wild West, including cacti, teepees and the sandstone buttes of Monument Valley.

For girls, we’ve chosen T-shirts and dresses with images of hearts and stars that have reversible sequins that can change colour with the wave of a hand. We’ve also selected bold-coloured reversible zip-up sweatshirts for girls, ranging in sizes for ages 5-6 up to 13-14, and blue raincoat with big drops of you-know-what.

The kids collection is expected to arrive on Monday March 5, 2018. Below are some of the exciting new styles for kids coming to Angel. Expect the Unexpected this season. Once the kids collection arrives, Angel will be offering 20% off on all Desigual for kids.

Today’s music is Who Do You Love by Vancouver band Marianas Trench, whose lead singer, Josh Ramsay, lives in Gastown and is an Angel customer. The group decided to take their $50,000 video budget and give it away through random acts of kindness and some charitible acts, including donating to a school music program. A camera crew filmed the four band members around Vancouver while spending time with their families (for Josh, that means his beloved dog). According to drummer Ian Casselman, the band was “trying to inspire people to do good things” – a good message for both kids and parents.

Today’s music is Oh Happy Day by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, recorded in 1969. It was recorded on a two-track machine and was originally intended as a fundraiser for a gospel competition, until a local deejay started playing it and it was released as a single, becoming a surprise hit of the psychedelic Sixties. Hawkins, 74, died last week.

South African jazz musician Hugh Masekala, 78, also died this week. He performed in 1967 at the Monterey Pop Music Festival along with Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Who, Janis Joplin, Ravi Shankar, and others. The next year, Masekela’s instrumental Grazing in the Grass was released and hit No. 1 in North America and internationally.

We also recently lost Dolores O’Riordan, 46, the lead singer for Irish band The Cranberries. She died at a London hotel last week but lived part of each year in Canada.

She was pleased that Eminem had sampled her vocals for his new song, In Your Head:

The day O’Riordan died, she was supposed to record a new version of Zombie with heavy-metal supergroup Bad Wolves. The band considered shelving the song after she died, but have now decided to release it and donate the sales proceeds to O’Riordan’s three children:

Today’s music is New Year’s Day by Irish rockers U2, released 35 years ago this month:

And here’s a new video of a 2015 song by Vancouver’s Bryan Adams, dressed as Elvis (along with his other bandmates). It was filmed in Madrid, Spain. Bryan lives in London now but returns to Vancouver to visit his Warehouse Studio, which is a block east of our Gastown store:

This is a new song by Bryan, Please Stay, with Planet Head people:

And here’s a new song by another Canadian, Vancouver music producer and DJ Taelor Deitcher, best known by his stage name Felix Cartal, who used to live in Gastown. The tune is an EDM version of the 1998 New Radicals hit, You Get What You Give:

The dance version leaves out this lyric that trash-talked several popular bands in 1998: “Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson/Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson/You’re all fakes, run to your mansions/Come around, we’ll kick your asses!” Marilyn Mason expressed his anger over the lyric. Gregg Alexander, the lead singer-songwriter for the New Radicals, broke up the band at the peak of their success in 1999. He went on to write songs for other artists, including co-writing Santana’s hit The Game of Love, for which he won a Grammy award in 2003 (his pseudonym at the time was Alex Ander). Listen to Gregg Alexander’s demo of the song here. More recently, Alexander co-wrote Lost Stars for the film Begin Again, starring Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and Keira Knightley; the song was in the running for an Oscar in 2015. (Gregg’s live acoustic versions of the song are here and here.) After the movie was released in 2013, Alexander broke his silence and did his first interview in 15 years.

Just before Christmas 57 years ago – in 1960 – Berry Gordy Jr. released Shop Around by his first hit-making group, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles:

One of the Miracles, Pete Moore, died last month in Las Vegas. He co-wrote with Robinson two of the group’s greatest songs, both released in 1965 – Ooo Baby Baby, and Tracks of My Tears. The latter song was inspired by the sad clown from the Italian opera Pagliacci, as was the group’s 1970 hit, The Tears of a Clown. Stevie Wonder wrote the music for Tears of a Clown, but asked Robinson if he could come up with some lyrics.

Steve Winwood is a former member of the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic. In 1969, he formed a supergroup with Eric Clapton called Blind Faith. One of their best songs, Can’t Find My Way Home, was written by Winwood. Here is a live version from 2007 with Clapton and guitarists Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II who plays left-handed like Jimi Hendrix, who spent some time in Vancouver:

In keeping with the blackness of Black Friday, here are my two favourite black-themed songs, both from 1966. The first is Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones, featuring Stones member Brian Jones on the sitar and Mick with a poofy haircut:

The second is Black is Black by Spanish band Los Bravos:

Here’s another Stones song, Sweet Black Angel, recorded in 1970 but not released until 1972’s Exile On Main Street album. One of the Stones’ most overtly political songs, it was about black activist/feminist Angela Davis, a University of California professor who at the time of the Stones recording was in jail accused of conspiracy in four murder counts. Davis was eventually acquitted by an all-white jury and resumed teaching at UCLA.

The lovely Della Reese, who died earlier this week, played a sweet black angel on the long-running TV series Touched by An Angel. Her biggest hit came in 1959 with the release of Don’t You Know, which adapted Musetta’s Waltz, an aria from Puccini‘s opera La Bohème. But her voice was simply angelic on this 1960 recording, These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You):
