When I first heard this song on the radio, I thought a woman sang it, until I watched the live video. Portugal.TheMan is a band from Portland, Oregon, which is 508 kilometres Due South from Vancouver, Canada. The city’s unofficial motto: Keep Portland Weird.

Brooklyn’s High & Mighty Brass does a punchy version. Here’s the ZHU dance Remix:

This is Juice by Chromeo, a Canadian electro-funk duo from Montreal. One is a Jew, the other an Arab. In Canada, we can laugh at our differences and similarities, which in this song is a penchant for orange high heels and black leather mini skirts (their new album is called Head Over Heels):

Chromeo’s lead singer and guitarist, David Macklovitch, has a sideline gig: He’s also a university professor in New York — he has taught French and French literature at Columbia University and Barnard College… And here’s the latest hit by another Canadian, 22-year-old Scott Helman, which has a bit of a Bo Diddley beat:

21 million people (and counting) have seen Angel’s store window in 48 hours

Jeongyeon, lead singer of the Korean pop group Twice, looking in the window of Angel. From the music video “Likey,” which was released Monday and already has more than 21 million hits.

It’s not every day that you get 21 million people looking at your store window in 48 hours. But thanks to a new music video by the nine-woman South Korean K-pop group Twice, which posted the video for Likey on YouTube at 6 p.m. on Monday, Angel has received amazing worldwide exposure that is growing by the minute.

The camera crew also filmed inside our store, shooting Twice lead singer Jeongyeon looking inside Angel while singing: “There are so many pretty things to wear.”

The video was shot entirely in Vancouver and its suburbs, featuring the Gastown Steam Clock, the Europe Hotel in Maple Tree Square (Angel is located on the corner of the square), some of the other local Gastown shops, a back alley in Gastown, Stanley Park, the White Rock pier, a Steveston gas station and some residential streets:

Oscar-winning costume designer Angus Strathie is a Desigual fan

Angus Strathie won an Academy Award in 2001 for Best Costume design on the film Moulin Rouge!

Oscar-winning costume designer Angus Strathie popped into Angel over the weekend and bought two Desigual Exotic Denim jackets – the CLAU and a blue one called BLONDI BLUES – from the Fall-Winter 2017 collection (see photos below).

Strathie won an Academy Award, shared with costume designer/producer Catherine Martin, for the Baz Luhrmann film Moulin Rouge! Strathie was also costume designer on Deadpool, directed by and starring Vancouver actor Ryan Reynolds, who has been shooting the Deadpool sequel in our city.

The Desigual man collection for Fall-Winter 2017 is a bit darker than the summer 2017 line, with bold colour knit sweaters and surrealist imagery on T-shirts, shirts and sweatshirts.

There are also some solid-colour men’s jackets for fall, including a brown one that you’d swear was leather but is actually vegan leather, which has the advantage of being rainproof – perfect for Vancouver weather. And there are some men’s coats with knitted sleeves for fall, which look like you’re wearing a sweater under a vest-jacket. But the sleeves can zip off on one jacket, transforming into a vest.

Today’s music video is Bobcaygeon by Gord Downie, the lead singer-songwriter for much-loved Canadian band The Tragically Hip, who died today. He was 53. He was a friend of Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, who became choked up when he discussed Downie’s passing.

Last year, Downie revealed he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an incurable form of brain cancer. He and the Hip did a final national tour last year.

Tom Petty joined the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys by accident — George Harrison planned to record a song at Bob Dylan‘s house with Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Dylan, but had left his guitar at Petty’s house. He asked Petty to join the session when George went to get the guitar. They had so much fun doing one song, Handle With Care, they decided to make a whole record, which was recorded in the kitchen of the home of Dave Stewart (of the Eurythmics) over a 10-day session in May 1988. Orbison died in December of that year, which is the reason his guitar is on a chair in the video for End of the Line:

The night Tom Petty died, within minutes of taking the stage, Coldplay and former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck decided to play this tribute to Mr. Petty (unrehearsed?) in Portland, Ore:

Goodbye Summer. Hello sweater weather.

Fall-Winter 2017 collection

What seemed like the endless summer finally came to an end a week ago. Starting mid June, the rain stopped and we had an unusually hot, dry summer. No rain for two months. Fun in the sun. We wore light summer clothes all summer. But now:

Goodbye sleeveless tops, shorts and sandals that we wore every day. Even at night.

Goodbye fresh local summer berries and cherries.

Goodbye swims in lakes heated by the hot summer sun.

Goodbye to cruising with the top down on the convertible, listening to this song.

And lastly, here’s a new bittersweet video for the song Traveling Light by the late, great Canadian poet & troubadour, Leonard Cohen, who died almost a year ago:

To mark the anniversary of his passing, there will be a memorial concert in his native Montreal on Nov. 6, 2017, called Tower of Song.

The musical guests will include: Elvis Costello, Lana Del Rey, Feist, Philip Glass, k.d. lang, Damien Rice, Sting, Patrick Watson, Wesley Schultz & Jeremiah Fraites from The Lumineers, Leonard’s son Adam Cohen, and the Ballets Jazz De Montreal.

Additional artists, as well as actors paying homage through spoken word performances, will be announced soon. (Update Oct. 26: Vancouver actor Seth Rogen, Quebec chanteuse-songwriter Coeur de Pirate and American rocker Courtney Love have been added to the tribute concert.)

His son Adam recalls: “My father left me with a list of instructions before he passed: ‘Put me in a pine box next to my mother and father. Have a small memorial for close friends and family in Los Angeles…and if you want a public event do it in Montreal.’ I see this concert as a fulfillment of my duties to my father that we gather in Montreal to ring the bells that still can ring.”

The event will benefit the Canada Council for the Arts, the Council of Arts and Letters of Quebec, and the Montreal Arts Council.

Tower of Song will mark the first anniversary of Leonard’s passing and commence a week of celebrations honouring Cohen in Montreal. As previously announced, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal’s new exhibit, “Leonard Cohen: Une brèche en toute chose / A Crack in Everything,” will open to the public November 9. The exhibit was approved by the late songwriter before his passing and will celebrate Cohen’s life and work. Select media and top tier Tower of Song ticket holders will be invited to a preview of the exhibit on November 7.

Desigual for Burning Man this weekend

There’s no turning back now. The Man will burn this weekend. Tens of thousands of people gather each year at Black Rock City, a city in the flat Nevada desert that will disappear after this long weekend. Until next year. It’s a place where art meets survival camp conditions and dazzles Burners, as Burning Man attendees refer to themselves.

A number of people visited Angel in recent weeks to buy Desigual pieces they were planning to wear at Burning Man. We don’t have any photos of those people. Instead, here are a few pics of this year’s Man to be Burned (he’s in a handcrafted-wood pagoda) and some of the desert work styles of the folks who help make Burning Man happen:

Patti Smith wrote a lovely piece this week about the passing of her “buddy” — actor/playwright Sam Shepard — in The New Yorker. Music nowadays seems to be dominated by DJs such as Calvin Harris, now a Scottish record music producer whose new song, Feels, features a superstar trio: Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean

And I like this video for Where R Ü Now by DJs Diplo, Skrillex & Canada’s Justin Bieber. I wish my visits to the supermarket were like this:
