I can see them out the window of my Gastown store.
These twin peaks overlooking Vancouver are called The Lions. The indigenous Squamish people named these two landmark peaks “Ch’ich’iyúy Elxwíkn” (translation: ‘Twin Sisters’). The Lions Gate Bridge takes its name from the peaks, as does the movie studio Lions Gate Entertainment, founded by Vancouver’s Frank Giustra.

Today’s music video is The Sound of Fury by 1950s/early ’60s British rocker Billy Fury:Billy’s drummer on the recording was Andy White, who died this week at the age of 85. White was a Scottish drummer who played on the Beatles first 1962 hit, Love Me Do. The following video explains how the record’s producer, George Martin, didn’t feel the Beatles original drummer, Pete Best, was good enough, so they replaced him with Ringo for the session, then Andy White (with Ringo playing tambourine on White’s version). White also played drums on the recordings of P.S. I Love You and Please Please Me. Ringo, of course, got the drummer gig, but White’s version was released as the Beatles single in the U.S and became No. 1 worldwide; White’s version also was contained on the Beatles first album, Please Please Me:And finally, here’s a cool version of the Beatles song, Please Please Me, by Vancouver singer-songwriter Wyckham Porteous. The song was produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, the original manager/producer of the Rolling Stones (1963-67), who had asked Wyckham to slow down the tempo of the original version:And thanks to Dale Wiese, owner of Vancouver record store Noize To Go, for emailing me the link to the Billy Fury video and recalling the history of White playing drums on the first Beatles record. He is a wealth of music history.
The music business also lost another great singer-songwriter and producer this week — Allen Toussaint died of a heart attack in Madrid while on a tour. Born in New Orleans, Toussaint was a great pianist who was taught by the legendary Professor Longhair. In the 1950s, he wrote and produced some great songs such as It’s Raining for Irma Thomas, Ya-Ya and Working in a Coal Mine by Lee Dorsey, I Like it Like That by Chris Kenner, and Mother-in-Lawby Ernie K-Doe. He went on to work with Paul McCartney and Wings on their hit album Venus and Mars, Glen Campbell covered Toussaint’s Southern Nights, which reached No. 1 on the Pop, Country and Adult-Contemporary charts, and Toussaint produced this No. 1 smash hit by Labelle:Last time I saw Toussaint perform in Vancouver was with Elvis Costello:

We’ll also have Mockingjay buttons — the Mockingjay is the symbol of of hope and courage — courtesy of the film’s distributor, Entertainment One Films. Mockingjay is the final book of the trilogy written by Suzanne Collins.
Here’s a synopsis of Mockingjay Part 2: With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss Everdeen [Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence] confronts President Snow [Canadian actor Donald Sutherland] in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin] and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, staging an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced perviously. The cast also includes Julianne Moore, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks.
