I opened Angel in 1978 on West Fourth Avenue, beside the Jerry’s Cove pub. Angel later moved to West Broadway, spent 17 years on Robson Street and then moved 15 years ago to No. 2 Powell Street in the Gastown district of Vancouver, Canada.

What they are wearing on the streets of Milan

Men are wearing lots of hats on the streets of Milan this year, some traditional, some not. White pants with a jacket always looks snappy, as does a white jacket with a dark blue shirt. Men wearing suits and shoes without socks is becoming common not just in Milan but also London, New York and Vancouver, at least for summer.

Wearing stripes and polka dots shows real confidence in your style. And at least one man was spotted in Milan wearing tights (see photo below). All the WWD photos are here.

Getting semi-naked for Desigual (with videos) アジアで初開催! ついに東京上陸!

Desigual, the Barcelona-based clothing line, offers a promotion at some of its stores around the world: Free clothes for the first 100 people who show up at a semi-naked party. We can’t afford to make the same offer, but here is a photo and two videos of the recent semi-naked event in Tokyo and then another that says it’s Tokyo, but it’s in Europe:

An amazing murmuration (with video)

A flock of starlings is called a murmuration. When threatened by a predator such as a hawk or falcon, the flock seems to move as one to fend off an attack, which is truly a sight to behold, as these two young women witnessed on the River Shannon in Ireland:

A Mustang shirt for a Mustang Sally weekend (with three videos)

The perfect Desigual shirt, called Mustang, to wear while singing Mustang Sally.

All weekend I’ve had the song Mustang Sally echoing in my brain. On Saturday night, we went to celebrate a friend’s birthday at Salmon House on the Hill in West Vancouver, which has great food, a spectacular view of Vancouver’s harbour and had Checo Tohomaso performing in the Coho lounge, where we ate.

Checo got us up dancing and singing some great Motown hits, like Mustang Sally, Brick House, Earth Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean.

Checo, for those who don’t know him, used to sing and play keyboards with Marvin Gaye’s band and the Commodores. He’s a great singer and performer. He pre-programs his electronic keyboard, which allows him to get up and dance with everyone on the dancefloor. He also got an audience member on the dancefloor (holding a sleeping child) to sing Billie Jean. It was funny and fun while everyone was busting out their dances moves.

Checo grew up in Hawaii, where his band Nova played at Barack Obama‘s junior prom in 1978 at Punahou School. Today, he is an incredibly positive performer who believes in the healing power of soul music. He is the director of the Victoria Soul Gospel Choir and below is a sample of his performing energy leading Vancouver’s VOC Sweet Soul Gospel Choir:

Some new hand-painted shirts by Angel Vancouver

Here are a few of the latest hand-painted shirts now at my store, Angel Vancouver, which specializes in custom hand-painted designs. If you want, you can bring me an image and I can paint it on a shirt for between $60 and $90, depending on the complexity and the number of colours.

Over the years, I have painted people’s horses, dogs, cats and pet birds. At the moment, I’m painting a giraffe shirt for a customer’s grandson. I also paint lions, tigers, panthers and jaguars. I can also paint your favorite piece of artwork on a shirt. Or your favourite punk art. We ship worldwide.

And here is a tropadelic music video by a Vancouver group, Bestie, doing their Afrobeat song Pineapple, which I saw them perform recently at the Fortune Sound Club in Vancouver’s Chinatown. They are part of the Peak radio station’s Peak Performance Project to pick the best new band of 2013. Lead singer Tristan Orchard is the son of local filmmaker Nick Orchard. The other Bestie members are Rob Cameron, Andrew Janczewski on guitar and Daniel Ruiz.

Here’s a small film by Bryan Adams, whose recording studio, The Warehouse, is block east of my store. It features Estonian supermodel Carmen Kass, who was discovered at the age of 14 in a Tallinn supermarket by an Italian modeling scout. She has since graced dozens of magazine covers and appeared in advertisements for such brands as Calvin Klein, Chanel, Donna Karan, Givenchy, Fendi, Michael Kors, the Gap and Sephora.

Bryan Adams also took this photo (below) of Ron Arad, a London designer. Here is a video of Ron’s Farmer & Cowboy bookcase being installed: I went to a party in London years ago and Ron pulled up driving his old Fiat 500, just like the one in this Bryan Adams photo:
