Psychedelic rock pioneer Roky Erickson, 71, died recently. He was the lead singer of the Texas band, the 13th Floor Elevators. This is a live song from their 1966 debut album:
Dr. John passed away this week. Born Mac Rebennack, he began playing New Orleans clubs at a young age, later becoming a session musician who recorded with such artists as Sonny & Cher, Harry Nilsson, the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Frank Zappa and many others. His first album in 1968, Gris-Gris, was recorded under the name “Dr. John, the Night Tripper.” I remember seeing him perform at the Gardens Auditorium in Vancouver, festooned in feathers, beads and sprinkling the audience with sparkle dust.
