When I first heard this tune on the radio, Girls Like You, I thought it was a Cardi B song, since she does a rap @2:58 (she also co-wrote the song). I didn’t realize the male voice was Adam Levine of Maroon 5. The video features a disappearing act of women (Adam also disappears at 3:27). And here’s a song, Broken, that hit No. 1 on alternative radio and now just hit No. 1 on Top 40. By Los Angeles trio loveleytheband. The song’s message is “It’s okay to not be okay.” The opening keyboard notes sound like a five-year-old. Maybe that’s the appeal:
Lead singer-songwriter Mitchy Collins said in a recent interview that he deals with “pretty bad depression” at times. But the band is currently riding a wave of success. Here’s a rare recording of Jimi Hendrix on acoustic guitar. We love Jimi’s fashion sense – he certainly had his own style and wasn’t afraid of colourful clothing:
This shot of my store window is a screen grab from the K-pop music video Likely by South Korean “girl” group Twice.
A year ago, a film crew and a bunch of young women arrived at our store to shoot a music video. The young man in charge explained that the “girls” were a K-pop group from South Korea. He didn’t mention their name. They spent a couple of hours shooting outside and inside my store, and the young women danced in Maple Tree Square outside my store.
About a month later, I got an email from a friend, asking if I had seen this new video that featured my store. He sent me the link to the video, which had been released hours earlier but already had six million hits. It was called Likey by a group called Twice. It was a catchy tune and the video was shot entirely in Vancouver.
That first day, I would check back every few hours and was amazed to watch the numbers of viewers climb: 7 million only 30 minutes later, then 10 million a few hours later and 21 million views within 48 hours. It reached 100 million after only 33 days, a new record for a Korean group.
Now, one year after it was released, the Likey video now has been watched 318 million times (a number that will be out of date by the time you read this).
The video also spawned kids from South Korea gathering in front of my store window to pose. We had two young women yesterday, taking photos. This summer, an older man came into my store and said: “This store is very famous in Korea.”
We even has some young Mexican men come in the store and start asking questions. “Did you meet them?” one of them asked. “How tall are they?”

The song was written in 1974 by Nick Lowe, who recently played in Vancouver with Los Straightjackets:
Lowe is a great songwriter who has written about 400 tunes. His only big hit came in 1979:
Nick started another song in 1979, The Beast in Me, which he wrote for his then father-in-law, Johnny Cash (at the time, Lowe was married to Cash’s stepdaughter, Carlene Carter). But Lowe didn’t finish the song for another 12 years. This is Lowe’s demo, which he sent to Cash, who recorded the song in 1994 (the Johnny Cash version is here):

I was recently driving and heard the radio announcer say this song, “Africa,” was by Weezer, which seemed very odd that they would do a cover of 1982 hit by Toto. Even stranger, the Weezer version recently hit No. 1 and the band released this new video of the song, featuring Weird Al Yankovic:
Chicago blues artist Otis Rush died this week. He influenced many rock bands, including Led Zepellin, who made this song (written by blues legend Willie Dixon) famous:
Josh Ramsay, the lead singer of Vancouver band Marianas Trench, dropped into Angel recently and bought a few Desigual shirts. The band is recording a new album down the street at Bryan Adams‘ Warehouse Studio.

The first shipment of the Desigual Fall 2018 collection has arrived at Angel. This season’s theme is We Are Animals, with tigers and horses featured on the new SIALUK jacket, which has a zip front and zip side pockets (photos below).
So far, we’ve received new Desigual Fall coats, tops, dress, scarves and bags for women, and shirts, T-shirts, jeans and hoodies for men. There’s plenty more coming for Fall, including the children’s collection, which will arrive soon.
