Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote that the “best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men” often go awry. And so it was on my recent trip to Mexico.
I had stayed up to 2 a.m. the night before finishing off a dog shirt for a customer — he had given me a photo of his nephew’s dog to paint on a shirt for the young boy’s birthday. And just before leaving for the airport, I had dropped into my store to drop of the shirt for the customer to pick up. But I got distracted at the store. I didn’t realize until I got to the airport that I still had the shirt in my bag.
After arriving in Mexico, I thought, well, the dog shirt should have a little holiday, too. So I took a few photos of the shirt while I was renting a casita in San Miguel de Allende:
The big skeletons in the photo below were part of the two-day Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico, where it is called Día de Muertos. They believe that the gates of heaven open at midnight on Oct. 31, when the spirits of all angelitos (deceased children) are allowed to visit their families for 24 hours. On Nov. 2, the spirits of adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them, which are laid out on alters called ofrendas that are deecorated with candles, fruit, wild marigolds and the favourite foods and drink of the deceased, including mescal and tequila, and even cigars. Folk art skeletons and skeleton sugar skulls are also traditional. People also dress up and walk the street as skeletons, including their faces painted. Here are a few photos from the two days of Day of the Dead that I spent in San Miguel and Mexico City, including a visit to the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan, a town that now is part of Mexico City:
