Today’s video is Todas Las Cabezas Están Locas by Alex Cuba, a former Cuban who lives in the northern British Columbia town of Smithers, a beautiful spot in the mountains that is north of Vancouver (a French version of the song, Dans La Folie De L’Amour, is here):
This a Canadian trio of women, Belle Starr, who all sing, play guitar & fiddle. One of the young women, Kendel Carson, is from Victoria, B.C. They add some country/roots twang to the Talking Heads classic, This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody) and more recently, New Girl Now:

Angel loves songs called Angel. This one is from 2000 from Jamaican-American reggae singer Shaggy:
The tune samples the bass line from the 1973 song The Joker by Steve Miller and the melody is from Angel of the Morning, written by American Chip Taylor, the brother of actor Jon Voigt and the uncle of actress Angelina Jolie. It was originally recorded in 1967 by singer Evie Sands but became a hit the following year when released by Seattle singer Merrilee Rush & the Turnabouts. This 1995 version is my fave, by Chrissie Hynde & the Pretenders:
The song was also a hit in 1981 by country-rock star Juice Newton. The songwriter was perhaps best known for writing Wild Thing, first recorded in 1965 by Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones; it became a hit in 1966 when recorded by The Troggs and became legendary for a 1967 live performance at the Monterey Pop Festival by Jimi Hendrix. This is reggae singer Sister Carol‘s version of Wild Thing for the final scene/closing credits of the Jonathan Demme movie Something Wild:

In keeping with the Global Traveller collection, this is a song by Peter Gabriel, one of the champions of World Music, co-founding the WOMAD festival in 1982 and Real World Records in 1990. This is a live performance from 1993 in Modena, Italy. It introduced world audiences to Congo soukous star Papa Wembe and helped turn him into a pop star. Canadian avant-garde playwright/director Robert Lepage was involved in the concept staging for this Secret World Live tour, which had a square stage linked to a round stage by a conveyor belt. Peter & band made full use of the round stage here:
I always thought this 1982 song by Gabriel — his first No. 1 hit in the U.S. after going solo from Genesis — was about a monkey undergoing experimental electroshock therapy. Gabriel maintained it was a love song and the monkey was a metaphor for jealousy:

When the one-year anniversary of David Bowie‘s death came up recently, I started watching too many David Bowie videos, including this live version of Rebel Rebel:

Seven years ago, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was sleeping on a bare mattress in a Toronto apartment. Now 26 and known as The Weeknd, his latest single featuring French duo Daft Punk hit No. 1 in more than 80 countries 24 hours after its release late last year:
This song, Closer, features 21-year-old Halsey and is by U.S. deejay duo Drew Taggart and Alex Pall, also known as The Chainsmokers; it just clicked over the 1 billion mark on YouTube, which has to be something of a record for a lyric video, especially considering they have not yet released a debut album and have no immediate plans to do so:
And here’s a Canadian band from Vancouver called Hedley (the name of a small town in the Interior of B.C.), which just hit a respectable 1.4 million views for their lyric video:
When the Hedley video gets to the lyric “time machine” there is an animated graphic of a clock running backward. It reminds me of a pub I went to on the island of Inisheer (Inis Oírr), the smallest of the Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland. I had noticed the second hand on the pub’s clock running backwards, so I asked the barman about it.
“Well,” he explained, “some of the local wives had complained to the police about their husbands coming home late from the pub, well beyond closing time.” And since there were no police on the island — the closest Garda are in nearby Galway across the bay, a ferry ride away — two officers disguised as backpackers set up a tent on the nearby beach and decided to pay the Tigh Ned pub a visit one night to have a few beers. But when the Guinness continued to flow after closing time, the officers identified themselves and busted the pub for serving after hours.
“Now,” the barman said with a smile, “the longer you drink, the earlier it gets.”
