Today’s music video is 2 Heads, a hoe-down-style EDM number by Canadian Coleman Hell (the banjo is actually a sample, played on keyboards):The first song to use sampling was this 1971 hit, He’s Going to Step On You Again, by South African singer-songwriter John Kongos:Kongos later became a London record producer. He also produced four sons, who were born in South African but now live in Arizona, releasing this tribal swing hit as the band Kongos:

Today’s music video is House of the Rising Sun, released in 1964 by The Animals:The song, recorded in one take, is based on a traditional folk ballad also known as Rising Sun Blues, first recorded in 1933 by Appalachian artists Clarence “Tom” Ashley and Gwen Foster. American musicologist Alan Lomax made a field recording of a 16-year-old girl named Georgia Turner singing the song acappella in the Appalachian hills of rural Kentucky, which was released in 1941. Woody Guthrie also recorded a version in 1941, and it was recorded a few years later by bluesman Leadbelly. Inspired by Woody’s recording, Bob Dylan recorded an acoustic version in 1961 for his debut album, released in 1962:Two years later, Tom Wilson, the producer for The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, released in 1963, overdubbed a backing band for the song:And here’s a fan-shot video of a recent concert in South America of The Rolling Stones performing Dylan’s Like a Rolling Stone:Mick, now 72, walked into a store in Brazil and tried to use the phone, but didn’t have any money. Here’s how he tried to convince the shopkeepers that he was a “very famous rock star”:

Today’s music video is a live performance from Rio by the hard-rockin’ Hollywood Vampires, which will be making its first live televised performance Monday Feb. 15 at the Grammy Awards, playing tribute to Lemmy Kilimister of Motorhead, who died last December. The Vampires core band members are: actor Johnny Depp, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry and lead singer Vincent Furnier, better known as Alice Cooper. The group takes its name from a drinking fraternity formed by Cooper in the 1970s in a loft at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood, where the principal members were Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, Micky Dolenz, and Harry Nilsson, and occasionally John Lennon. The Grammy Awards will also feature a tribute by Lady Gaga to David Bowie, who died last month.

Today’s video is Coldplay with a new song Hymn for the Weekend:Coldplay got mixed reviews for its Super Bowl 2016 halftime show on Sunday — some say Bruno Mars and Beyonce stole the show — but at least Chris Martin of Coldplay wasn’t lip-synching and got the crowd singing with him. Of course, we loved the colour of the stage show and the dancers on the football field with coloured umbrellas. And no, despite some speculation that he was wearing Desigual, he wasn’t. By the way, that’s Beyonce in Coldplay’s new video, which has caused some controversy.
The use of coloured powder in India (in Coldplay’s video) reminds me of Desigual’s annual Color Run in Barcelona:

Saint Valentine receives a rosary. Painting by David Teniers III, 1638 – 1685.
Valentine’s Day wasn’t invented by greeting card companies. The history is murky but is may date back to the 3rd century in Rome, when Emperor Claudius II outlawed soldiers from marrying, believing men without wives and children would make better fighters. But one priest, Valentine, felt the decree was unjust and secretly married soldiers. Claudius, discovering this, put Valentine in prison and sentenced him to death.
During Valentine’s time in prison, he fell in love with a young woman, possibly his jailer’s daughter, and sent her a note proclaiming his love, signing it “From your Valentine.”
Vintage Valentine’s card
Later, he became St. Valentine. By the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until the Middle Ages that it began to be associated with courtly love and romance. People exchanged Valentine’s notes on the day, and small gifts of affection, but by the 19th century, mass printing production allowed the public access to printed cards, which created a whole industry. It now is one of the most popular days of the year to give a card adorned with hearts and cupids — two iconic symbols of love that I’ve been painting on shirts since I first opened the Angel store in 1978:
Today, if you’re looking for something to show your love on Valentine’s Day, we’ve got a great collection from Desigual: dresses, skirts, tops, coats & bags:

This is a new song, One Love, by Vancouver band Marianas Trench:Lead singer Josh Ramsay, who earlier bought Desigual at my store, lives just down the street in Gastown, where he recorded the band’s new album. I sometimes talk to Josh while he’s walking his dog (which made a brief appearance at 2:24 in the video for the band’s Pop 101 song). Josh explains here how he was riding an emotional high after co-writing and producing Call Me Maybe for Vancouver’s Carly Rae Jepsen, but then his mother got really sick, his pending wedding fell apart and he couldn’t write. He ended up in hospital, which got his creative juices flowing. You can click here to see how the video above was made. The band is currently touring the U.S, and will start a cross-Canada tour in March, ending in Vancouver on April 8 with a concert at the Pacific Coliseum, along with Canadian band Walk off the Earth….Jepsen released a video last year featuring actor Tom Hanks lip-synching I Really Like You before dancing in the streets of NYC with Jepsen and her Canadian pal Justin Bieber:Here is Carly’s latest bit of “near-perfect pop” from her new recording Emotion:And here’s one by the Bieb, Skrillex and Diplo:
The Moogician, Todd Charles, wearing his new Angel hand-painted shirt that features all thingsdairy — a cow, milk and cheese — in Miami.
Angel specializes in custom hand-painted shirts, including this one for Todd Charles, who calls himself the Moogician. His act arose from his living on a dairy farm in upstate New York. He now mixes dairy products — he juggles cheese, milk and cowmedy — in his show, along with some down-home banjo pickin’.
This is the third shirt I’ve painted for the Moogician, who lives in Florida.
Here was Todd’s thank-you note after receiving his second “moo” shirt:
Hiya Jackie,
Tanya gave me my birthday gift last night, and…WwwwwwoW!
This is the BEST ONE EVER, officially it’s my new favorite shirt!!!
You’ve done an awesome job (again), and wanted to Thank You.
This is the previous shirt I painted for Todd:
Another customer sent a recent email, saying he had worn the custom hand-painted Zoolander shirt and headband (I painted for him) to a costume party — he won first prize! And yet another customer sent this photo of a young boy, Simon, wearing the T-shirt I painted for him for Christmas. He wanted a Kermode bear — a rare white Black Bear, called “spirit bears” here in British Columbia.

David Bowie died last weekend at age 69, two days after the release of his final recording, Blackstar, and farewell video, Lazarus (his videos were viewed online 51 million times in one day this week, a new record). Much has been written and said about his burst of creativity and talent in his final days, and I think I’ve watched every Bowie video put on social media this week. But here are my three favourite Bowie videos.
The first is Bowie singing with British band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury. The video actually combines footage from two shows — Queen performing at London’s Wembley Stadium in 1986, and Bowie and Annie Lennox singing Under Pressure at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992. The song was first recorded by Queen and Bowie in 1981, arising out of a studio jam session in Montreux, Switzerland:The second is Bowie and Lou Reed playing together for Bowie’s 50th birthday. I like it because Bowie looks happy, relaxed, and truly at ease with life, and because of the look on Lou’s face:The third isn’t really a Bowie video, but a tribute to Bowie’s Space Oddity by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, recorded at the International Space Station:Bowie called it “possibly the most poignant version of the song ever created.” After YouTube shut down Hadfield’s space-station video over licensing issues, Bowie worked out a deal with his publisher to allow the video to stay online until November 2016. And one more from former Strawbs/Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who played piano on (Is There) Life on Mars? in 1971; he played this tribute to Bowie on BBC this week:
That’s me in the lower left corner wearing the Desigual Ethnic Deluxe jean jacket. I took the photo to model the jacket for a customer, who wanted to see what it looked like on me — she later bought the jacket.
I was surprised to see myself on Desigual’s website this week under its #MyDesigual section. And your photo can be featured there too. Just take a photo of yourself and post on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #MyDesigual and you might see your photo be featured in its collection of customers modelling their latest Desigual purchases.
We still have this Ethnic Deluxe jean jacket in stock at Angel. $165.95. It features knitted sleeves and handmade details that are Indian inspired, mixing East and West. It is our best seller of the season. Once we’re sold out, we won’t be able to order more because Desigual’s Spring 2016 collection will be arriving later this month.
Angel also has the Desigual Aurora shirt worn by the model in the video above — we have all sizes. And it’s on sale at 20% off the regular price of $149.95. We also have the bag flying in the video — Malta African Art.
Desigual MALTA AFRICAN ART bag. $104.95. Fall-Winter 2015.
