New Arrivals from Desigual Fall-Winter 2015 collection

We’ve just received a new shipment of Desigual this week, including new stock of the Ethnic Deluxe jean jacket that sold out earlier this month. We have the handmade jacket in sizes 38, 40, 42 & 46.

We also have new stock of a Desigual bolero-style jean jacket called Chale Boluxe, which has embroidery and beadwork on the front; the jacket is available in sizes 38, 40 & 44.We have a new style of women’s jeans, called Lurdes, which have embroidery on the front and removable suspenders. We have a new women’s cotton shirt, Aurora, a new women’s dress designed by Christian Lacroix called Natalie, which has a bead necklace sewn on the front, two new women’s purses: one is called Malta African Art, the other is red patent-leather shopping-style bag called San Francisco Kate.

For men, we have a new Desigual blue water-repellent winter jacket, Mix, which has a hoodie with an orange detachable knit collar, we have three new styles of Desigual socks for men, a new men’s T-shirt, Deconstructed, a new pair of Desigual men’s cordoroy jeans in green called Blai that have removable suspenders (we also have the Blai pants in blue) and a new men’s white shirt, Monkiki, which has little monkey faces (wearing headphones) as the pattern.

It was co-written by Sia, Adele and Vancouver singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. It was written for Adele’s new album but she decided not to do it, so Sia released it:

Canada’s new Prime Minister wore an Angel shirt as a kid

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, wore a handpainted Angel shirt as a child, as did his two younger brothers. The shirts were bought for the kids by Robert Gerow, who was a friend of Justin’s mother, whose maiden name was Margaret Sinclair, the daughter of former North Vancouver Liberal cabinet minister James Sinclair.

Robert Gerow, who used to live in Gastown (Angel sold his jewellery for many years), had made the wedding rings for Margaret and Pierre Trudeau — they got married in North Vancouver in March 1971. Nine months later, Justin was born on Christmas Day, 1971.

Justin has strong connections to Vancouver, first working here as a snowboard instructor and nightclub bouncer. Later, after completing a teaching degree, he taught at two Vancouver high schools, including Sir Winston Churchill.

The Angel rainbow shirt I painted for Justin back in the 1970s was similar to this one:

Maybe one day, I’ll paint shirts for Justin’s wife Sophie and their three children.

I loved this photo taken election night — just before Justin Trudeau took the stage to give his victory speech, he stopped to hug his mother:

Since this week’s election marks a return to optimism in Canada, today’s music video is Give Peace a Chance by John Lennon, which was recorded in Room 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal (Justin Trudeau’s hometown and the same hotel where he gave his victory speech) during the famous “Bed In” honeymoon of John and Yoko. The song was released in 1969, followed a few months later by Instant Karma!, which featured George Harrison and was produced by Phil Spector: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3_0GqPvr4U

Here were Lennon’s hand-written lyrics for the song:

Instant Karma! was released on Feb. 6, 1970, 10 days after Lennon wrote it. It appears Trudeau will move with similar dispatch to erase some of the the measures that displeased Canadians, implemented by the Harper government.

Angel has more than a dozen Desigual pieces designed by Paris couturier Christian Lacroix from the Fall-Winter 2015 collection, including some stunning new coats, dresses, T-shirts and blouses.

Here’s how Lacroix described the first time he saw a woman wearing Desigual:

“I was awestruck by the first girl dressed by Desigual that I saw in Paris. As I watched her, I could recognize in her a member of my own tribe. It was an explosion of colours and patchwork under the elegant, discreet and always monotonous French sky. It was fantastic, truly love at first sight, a breath of fresh air, all multicoloured, scorching, revitalizing, radiating Mediterranean colours and flavours and creeping into this global and colourless magma inhabited by zombies and clones.”

Angel will be offering in-store specials on Desigual for the Gastown Shop Hop event on Thursday Oct. 15, 5 to 9 p.m.

Angel will be open until 9 p.m. Thursday Oct. 15 for the Gastown Shop Hop, and we’re offering 20% off all Desigual, plus up to 35% off select items. This is a one-day only sale.

First Desigual boutique opens in Vancouver

The first Desigual boutique offering the latest styles of the Spanish brand opens today in Gastown.

Angel Vancouver, has been transformed into a Desigual Wow Shop.

Angel began selling the Barcelona brand four years ago. It was love at first sight when store owner Jackie Haliburton first encountered a few Desigual pieces in a small clothing store while on a trip to Rome.

Days later, when she visited Barcelona, she realized this was the city where Desigual clothing was based — she visited every Desigual store and bought a bagful of clothing to bring home to sell at Angel.

“It reminded me of my own Angel hand-painted clothing,” explains Haliburton. “It had the same bright colours and bold design that I put into my own work.”

In the intervening years, Angel now offers the largest selection of the latest Desigual collections on Canada’s west coast.

Haliburton was invited to Desigual headquarters last year to discuss giving her Gastown store more of a Desigual look. She agreed to let Desigual do a makeover of her store, which is on the corner of Carrall and Powell, across from the Gassy Jack statue in Maple Tree Square.

For the past week, a crew of Spanish speaking workers has transformed Angel, which will re-open Thursday.

“I’m hoping customers will go ‘Wow’ when they see the new look,” Haliburton said.

Angel Vancouver was started by Haliburton in 1978 as a hand-painted clothing store on Fourth Avenue in Kitsilano, later moving to Robson Street for 18 years and then to Gastown in 1998.

She still does custom hand-painted shirts for customers and for kids. Angel also carries three other Barcelona brands — Smash!, Paramita and Compania Fantastica — but Desigual remains the dominant brand in the store.

Angel also specializes in Desigual clothing designed by Paris couturier Christian Lacroix, who designs about 10 per cent of the Desigual line.

Three months ago, actress/social activist Jane Fonda dropped by Angel and bought a Desigual coat designed by Lacroix.

Here’s what Lacroix had to say about the first time he saw Desigual:

I was awestruck by the first girl dressed by Desigual that I saw in Paris. As I watched her, I could recognize in her a member of my own tribe. It was an explosion of colours and patchwork under the elegant, discreet and always monotonous French sky. It was fantastic, truly love at first sight, a breath of fresh air, all multicoloured, scorching, revitalizing, radiating Mediterranean colours and flavours and creeping into this global and colourless magma inhabited by zombies and clones.”

Angel will be transformed at the end of the month

Angel is closing for 10 days starting Sunday Sept. 20.

We’re going to spend the time painting, reorganizing and redecorating our store.

When we reopen Ocr. 1, we’re hoping customers will say: “Wow, it looks fabulous!”

Angel began almost 40 years ago as a handpainted clothing store on West 4th Avenue in Vancouver, later moving to Robson for 18 years and to our current Gastown in 1998.

Four years ago, we started carrying the Barcelona-based Desigual clothing line. Last year, we were invited to Desigual’s headquarters on Barceloneta Beach to drink some sangria and discuss giving our store more of a Desigual look.

We’ve agreed to allow Desigual to do a makeover of Angel. We’re hoping our regular customers will love it, and we’re looking forward to welcoming new customers from around the world — we love happy customers.

And for those of you who already know Desigual, you know the company’s battle cry is La Vida es Chula — Spanish translation: Life is Cool!

We’re excited to unveil the new Angel in 10 days, with some exciting events and surprises ahead.
