Today’s music video is a jazzy version of Gimme Shelter by the fabulous Lisa Fischer — I saw her and her band perform this last night at the Vancouver Jazz Festival:Lisa was a well-known background singer for such famous artists as Luther Vandross and Tina Turner, which was captured in the great documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. Since 1989, she has toured with The Rolling Stones and regularly performs a rockin’ duet with Mick Jagger on Gimme Shelter:
The streets of Gastown will be filled with music Wednesday night as hundreds of performers will play for free at Make Music Vancouver, and people will be dancing in the streets with this Brazilian drumming/dance group Bloco Energia:
It will take place Wednesday June 24th from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. More info about the groups playing at the festival is online here.
Powell & Water Streets will be shut down to traffic to allow the streets to be transformed into sidewalk stages and dance floors, showcasing hundreds of amateur and established musicians, and celebrating music in all its diversity. The first-ever edition was a resounding success, bringing 150 bands and 20,000 spectators to the streets of Gastown on June 21st, 2011.
Make Music Vancouver was inspired by La Fête de la Musique, an event launched in France in 1982, and has since gone global, taking place each year in over 450 cities worldwide today. It is being organized by Vancouver en Français and the Alliance Française de Vancouver, both non-profit cultural associations.
Make Music Vancouver is part of a global live music celebration that takes place every year in more than 100 countries. It started in 1981 in France, when a study revealed that a large part of the population, including half of all children, played a musical instrument. The French Ministry of Culture decided to bring people out on the streets to share their music – they called it “La Fête de la Musique.”
The Gastown event is non-commercial — none of the musicians is being paid to play. Even the organizers are donating their time and skills.
Le Hot Club de ma Rue, who will play at Make Music Vancouver, will play the Montreal Jazz Fest this summer. Below is their song, Si tu savais (If You Knew)
Each band will play 45-minute sets, many of which are showcasing their latest songs.
Angel will be open Wednesday night until 8. We have a huge selection of the Barcelona brand Desigual.
