Today’s music video is a new song, Rule the World, by Canadian band Walk Off the Earth:The band plays a sold-out show in Vancouver at the Vogue Theatre on Friday May 29, 2015. The group might be best known for its Gotye cover of Somebody I Used to Know, which had the five band members playing one guitar; the video has been viewed online 165 million times. Here’s the band’s latest cover of Rude by another Canadian band, Magic!, who dropped into my store last time they opened for Maroon 5 in Vancouver:While enroute to Vancouver, Walk Off the Earth band member Sarah Blackwood, who is seven months pregnant, got kicked off a UnitedAirlines flight Wednesday because her 23-month-old son was crying. Click here to see the interview Sarah did with Global News about the incident, which aired today and has created an uproar on social media. The airline maintains Sarah and her child were removed from the flight because “the child could not be secured for takeoff.”

Justine Brown used to paint Angel shirts 20 years ago, when our shop was on Robson Street. She went on to obtain a Masters in English Literature from the University of Toronto, taught English lit at Langara College in Vancouver and became an author and tango dancer. Now she’s back! Justine recently painted almost two dozen dazzling Angel shirts for kids, ranging from Size 1 to Size 8. Below are some of her latest creations, priced between $45 to $49, exclusively at Angel.

Today’s music video is I Went to the Store One Day by Father John Misty, who plays the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on Sunday May 24th:Here he is performing Bored in the USA on the Letterman show last year, which included a pre-recorded laugh track near the end of the song:Letterman did his final show this week, prompting The Globe and Mail to recall this first performance by Bob Dylan on Letterman with Los Angeles punk band the Plugz, who started off with a Sonny Boy Williamson blues song from 1955, Don’t Start Me Talkin’:Dylan and the band also performed a killer version of Jokerman, with Bob leaving the stage at one point (3:15) to find his harmonica:The Plugz drummer, Charlie Quintana, lived in Vancouver for many years — I bought his 1984 Volvo Turbo 240 wagon, while a set of drums were being delivered to his door. He recently explained how they came to be Dylan’s backing band on Letterman. And then quit; he told Bob “I just wanna rock.” He quit as Dylan’s touring drummer to join punk rockers Social Distortion for 10 years. We had quite a weekend. U2 played its first two shows of its 2015 tour in Vancouver, and the Dublin rockers even partied above our store one of those nights during a private party at the Diamond nightclub. Another Dublin musician, James Vincent McMorrow, played a free concert in Maple Tree Square, in front of my store, on Saturday night, and earlier in the day I saw actor/director William Macy get into a cab in front of my store:

U2 plays two concerts Thursday and Friday night (May 14 & 15) in Vancouver after spending a couple of weeks here rehearsing before kicking off their summer tour. It’s also a long weekend (Monday is a holiday but Angel will be open), with a free concert in front of my store Saturday that will include a number of bands. The featured act will be Dubliner James Vincent McMorrow, who begins playing at 7 p.m. on May 16th.
Traffic will be closed on Powell Street from Main to Abbott from 2 to 10 p.m. on Saturday; Carrall Street will also be closed.

Today’s videos are by James Vincent McMorrow, who is from Dublin, Ireland. He will be playing a free concert next weekend on Saturday May 16th, 2015, right in front of my store in Maple Tree Square.McMorrow will perform at 7 p.m. on the Red Bull Tour Bus, a 1967 GM bus that converts into a full stage with speakers and lighting gear.

The free concert will begin at 3 p.m. with a DJ until 4:30., when Vancouver’s White Ash Falls will perform, followed at 5:15 by the folk duo Dicey Hollow, then the Alberta Cross at 6 p.m.
Powell Street will be closed to traffic from Main Street from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday May 16th, 2015. Water Street (closest to the Gassy Jack statue) and Carrall Street will also be closed at that time. But visitors will still be able to access the Gastown parkade, across from the Woodward’s building, from both the Cordova Street and Water Street entrances. There is also street parking on Powell east of Main and along Alexander Street, east of Maple Tree Square. Or you can ride your bike and park for free!
Hey, maybe Dublin rockers U2, who have been rehearsing in Vancouver for weeks and will kick off their 2015 tour in Vancouver the night before, will show up in disguise and perform like they did with Jimmy Fallon this week in a New York subway station:
