Today’s music video is Let Your Hair Down by Canadian group Magic!, who recently dropped into my store . I didn’t recognize them — they were opening for Maroon 5 playing in Vancouver. The lead singer, Nasri Atweh, sang the chorus to their song Rude to jog my memory. It’s always nice to have some Magic in the store. Today’s music video is Ode to Billie Joe, a number 1 hit in 1967 by Bobbie Gentry, one of the first female country artists to write & produce her own songs:The song remains as enigmatic today as the day it was written. In an interview, Gentry explained the song’s mystery: “Everybody has a different guess about what was thrown off the bridge—flowers, a ring, even a baby. Anyone who hears the song can think what they want, but the real message of the song, if there must be a message, revolves around the nonchalant way the family talks about the suicide. They sit there eating their peas and apple pie and talking, without even realizing that Billie Joe’s girlfriend is sitting at the table, a member of the family.”

Josh Ramsay, the lead singer of Vancouver band Marianas Trench, dropped into Angel last weekend. He bought a Desigual jacket and a few T-shirts.
Josh lives in the neighbourhood — Gastown — and often walks his dog in front of my store. Josh’s family has a long-time involvement in the music business in Vancouver: his father, Miles Ramsay, used to write jingles and was a co-owner of Little Mountain Sound recording studio; his mother, a vocal coach, used to be a back-up singer for Leonard Cohen. Josh, 29, and his bandmates are recording a new album, earlier releasing this new song: Pop 101, a satire of the pop music biz. The band’s latest video is Here’s to the Zeros, which uses twisted humour to poke fun at the old children’s TV shows Mr. Rogers’ Neighbourhood and Sesame Street. Personally, I think the song needs more cowbell:

Today’s video is Rude, a song by Canadian reggae fusion band Magic! The band dropped into Angel on Friday and the lead singer bought a Desigual dress for his girlfriend. I didn’t recognize them but the singer, Nasri Atweh, said I probably heard them on the radio — he sang the chorus of Rude to jog my memory. Magic! is the opening act on Sunday March 29/15 for Maroon 5 at Rogers Arena:And here’s Sugar, a new song by Maroon 5. The video was shot by David Dobkin, who directed the 2005 film Wedding Crashers. Dobkin suggested to Maroon 5 lead singer/songwriter Adam Levine to shoot the band playing at a number of weddings on a single day across Los Angeles — only the grooms knew who the wedding crasher band would be:And in memory of Samuel Charters, who died last week, here’s the song that inspired him to write The Country Blues, a seminal book written in the 1950s that chronicled the rural blues of America, which later inspired the early career of Bob Dylan and led to such bands as The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Them and the Allman Brothers resurrecting country blues standards, revitalizing the careers of such blues musicians as Texas guitarist Lightnin’ Hopkins and countless others:Here’s British guitarist Eric Clapton‘s unplugged version of the same tune from 1992:And finally, here’s a classic one-chord country blues song, Smokestack Lightnin’, which had been performed since the 1930s by Chester Burnett, better known as Howlin’ Wolf.
