Gastown Pop-Up Park this weekend on Carrall Street

Gastown.pop.up.parkGastown has a new Pop-Up Park on the Carrall Street side of my store this weekend. It opened at noon Friday and continues Saturday, with Carrall Street closed between Water and Cordova from noon to 9 p.m. each Friday & Saturday until the end of August.

The Irish Heather gastro pub and Blarney Stone pub/restaurant have added extra outdoor seating on the street, as have the Cork & Fin and Notturno. And there are picnic tables, benches and sun umbrellas for people to enjoy, as well as games of chess and checkers. You can also bring your own board games and have a pop-up picnic in this urban park, located in Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood. The street will also be closed Aug. 30 & 31 for the Gastown BBQ and Chili Festival, which has 12 local restaurants vying to win the title of best in four categories: chicken wings, pork ribs, beef brisket and slow-roasted pig.

Last night, I went to see the fabulous new film Boyhood by Rick Linklater, whose previous films include Slacker (his first film to catch my attention), Dazed and Confused, Waking Life and the trilogy Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, which were made over a 17-year period. His new film was made over a 12-year period with the same cast, showing the evolution of a boy from age six to 18, when he goes off to college.

Jay DeMerit’s buddy buys Desigual monkey shirt

Jay.Demerit.and.Ashley.McIvorJay DeMerit, who announced his retirement last week as captain of Vancouver’s Whitecaps soccer team, popped into Angel on Monday with two friends — one bought a Desigual shirt called  Monkey 3D.

Desigual.man.TS.MONKEY.3D.red.SS2014.41T1472_3144 Desigual.MONKEY.3D.blue.SS2014I told Jay that I knew his mother, who had dropped by the store some years ago, after Jay first moved to Vancouver. “You know my mother?” he asked. “Yes, she’s great,” I replied. Jay agreed, giving me a high five.

Jay’s buddy, by the way, wanted the monkey shirt in a medium. I told him to try a large, saying it was like a “Spanish medium.” It fit him perfectly.

As the trio left, I heard Jay jokingly say to his buddy: “It’s not a large, it’s a Spanish medium.”

Jay lives in Gastown and often washes his cool car — an orange 1969 Camaro SS convertible with a white top and interior — on the street outside his apartment.

New Desigual video features Canadian song

Desigual released a new video this week, shot in Rio, featuring the song It’s a Beautiful Life by Canadian singer-songwriter Tim McMorris, who lives in Niagara Falls, Ontario:Tim’s song was also used in Alex Chacón’s video motorcycle diaries titled Around the World in 360 Degrees:Chacón’s video went viral after it was posted two months ago. It has been viewed almost 10 million times. It also prompted McMorris to release his song on iTunes. Here is another McMorris song, Overwhelmed:The woman in the video is his wife, Khaili Conway, an actress, model, singer and writer who attended the Brit School for Performing Arts in London, England. She and Tim wrote this song, Living It Happy, with Tim directing the video:The Internet has turned the whole music business on its head. It used to be that a band or musician had to tour to sell records, but as Tim McMorris proves, a good video using your music can help sell the music without leaving home.
