Last year, we posted a fabulous video that captured some urban freestyle street skiing made by legendary skier Jean-Phillipe Auclair and Dave Mossop of Whistler’s Sherpas Cinema.
Sadly, JP Auclair died this week in an avalanche in the mountains of Patagonia in Chile. He was 37. National Geographic’s CarlĀ AndreasĀ Fransson, originally from Sweden, was also found dead. Two others survived.
Here is the video that Auclair and Mossop made in the industrial town of Trail, British Columbia, and Nelson, B.C. They shot it without a crew and didn’t take out any permits, but it caught the public imagination like no other ski film:Last week, Auclair posted this video on Facebook, saying he was thinking about skiing “dreamy spines”:The Bella Coola is a remote area in the interior of British Columbia. The video shows how dangerous making these ski films can be.

Today’s music is a new song by Canadian poet, troubador and national treasure, Leonard Cohen:He released a new record on his 80th birthday last week. Previously, a Desigual ad featured two women kissing. This one has a kiss by two men. And a talking donkey, who says “La Vida es chula.” (Translation from Spanish: Life is Cool!) We have a number of the items featured in the new video, including the Janet dress worn by Adriana Lima and the shirt (see below) worn by one of the dancing men in the video.
The video at the top of this post features the Italian-made Isetta, which was the world’s first micro-car, unveiled in the early 1950s. It orginally used a single cylinder Iso motorcycle engne. BMW bought the rights to produce the car in 1955 and used a three-litre engine that got 94 miles per gallon. That last of the orginal designs were built in Spain in 1958
The Isetta had its steering wheel and controls attached to the door on the front, which was the only entry into the vehicle. Isetta also made a pickup version for Rome’s ancient narrow streets, which were built for wagons and horses.

The design originally was based on much looser fitting pants from Arabia. There is also a similar design worn by the hill tribes in northern Thailand called Hmong pants. Today’s music video is U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer, who wore harem pants for this video (they were known as Hammer pants then):
Recorded in 1989, the song was released in January 1990 and was an instant smash, helping Hammer sell 18 million records. The song sampled the opening riff of this 1981 Rick James song, Super Freak:
Rick James had played in a Canadian band called the Mynah Birds with Neil Young and Bruce Palmer. The Mynah Birds recorded this 1966 song at Motown’s studio in Detroit:
Young and Palmer moved to Los Angeles and joined Buffalo Springfield, which released this song in 1966: For What It’s Worth, written by Stephen Stills:

Later the same year (1967), Buffalo Springfield recorded their second and final album, which contained this song, Rock & Roll Woman:
Co-written by Stephen Stills and David Crosby, the song was about Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane. When the band broke up, Stills and Crosby formed Crosby Stills and Nash (with Graham Nash of The Hollies) while Young went on to start his solo career, later joining Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Buffalo Springfield did this reunion benefit concert in 2010:

This poster for the 1964 surf movie is now 50 years old. It was designed by pop artist John Van Hamersveld.
After a months-long stretch of dazzling sunshine and hot weather on the West Coast of Canada, it might seem like an endless summer. By the way, the Endless Summer poster above was designed by John Van Hamersveld, one of my former classmates at the Chouinard Insitute of the Arts (now called California Institute of the Arts) in Los Angeles. He designed the poster with saturated Day-Glo colours while he was still an art student. It became an icon of the 1960s, the Southern California surf culture and now is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The poster launched the pop art career of Van Hamersveld, a surfer who previously had been art director of Surfer magazine.
In 1967,Ā Van Hamersveld got a call from Capitol Records, which was trying to figure out how to issue the Beatles‘ Magical Mystery Tour record in the U.S. The film had flopped in the U.K. and Capitol was looking for fresh artwork for the album cover, but wanted to keep the photo of the four Beatles wearing masks and costumes (John is the walrus, Ringo is a chicken, Paul is a hippo, George is a bunny). After a meeting at Capitol’s executive offices, Van Hamersveld went home and created the cover in 48 hours.
Van Hamersveld went on to do the Exile on Main Street cover for the Rolling Stones in 1972, Skeletons in the Closet for the Grateful Dead two years later, Kiss and Blondie‘s Eat to the Beat. There is a good interview here with Van Hamersveld about his early days, including his time as a concert promotor from 1967-68, for which he produced iconic poster art for Jefferson Airplane & Jimi Hendrix. The music in the video above, showing John Van Hamersveld’s artwork shown on the 1,500-foot long ceiling screen on the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas (made up of 12.5 million LED lamps), was The Zombies‘ Time of the Season. Here’s another Zombies tune, She’s Not There, the English band’s debut record performed live in 1965 on the first episode of the Hullabaloo TV show, with subtitulado en espanol:The song hit No. 1 in America in 1964, after the Beatles opened the door to the British Invasion.
Jesse Kovacs, a contestant on the TV series Bachelor in Paradise, wore a summer shirt by Desigual in last week’s episode. Jesse said in a later media interview that he wore the floral Desigual FLORES shirt because he thought it was “fun.”
The summer series brings back a number of bachelors and bachelorettes from previous seasons of the Bachelor franchise and brings them together in Mexico, giving them a second chance to find true love.

Desigual unveiled some of its line for Spring-Summer 2015 on the catwalk today during New York Fashion Week. (See video below.) Brazilian supermodel Adrian Lima was front and centre on the NYC catwalk, since she is Desigual’s brand ambassador for the next two years. The show also featured some of the styles next year from Christian Lacroix, who designs some of the Desigual line.
