We’ve just added a new line of T-shirts from OCB Designs, a Canadian company based in Virginia. These are redesigned hand-dyed shirts that are form-fitting & made from 100% organic cotton.
Here I am wearing an OCB Designs T-shirt. They are hand-painted, hand-dyed shirts by Thomas O’Casey. photo by angelvancouver.com
The shirts are by Thomas O’Casey. Thomas and myself attended the Chouinard art school together in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Here is some info about Tom from his website: “Over 30 years of design and concept support for NASA Design — created the ‘Aerospace Design Exhibit’ for NASA, comprised of historical NASA wind tunnel test models as art and sculpture forms, based on Brancusi’s ‘Bird in Flight’, developed with Chicago architect Jeanne Gang and the Art Institute of Chicago. Also worked for Fortune 500 companies: Universal Studios, California; supporting artist management for Geffen/Roberts, STAX Records, Warner Brothers in Chicago; Nick Wilder Gallery, Leo Castelli and Andre Emmerich Galleries; Corcoran School of Art and Chouinard/Cal Arts. Also assisted Frank Gehry with his early work on his Santa Monica House.”
For his next batch, Thomas plans to dye shirts and other garments “in the air” by a unique process. Stay tuned for more shirts in different colours over the next few months.

Today’s music is Canada’s k.d. lang singing Leonard Cohen’s song Hallelujah at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver:She first played Vancouver at the nightclub above my store, which was then called The Savoy but now is called the Diamond. Here is what she was like then:I also saw her perform this song on a paddlewheeler in Vancouver’s harbour; she signed her first major recording contract that night in the ship’s wheelhouse:And finally, here’s one of my k.d. lang favourites, performing Neil Young’s song, Helpless:Neil Young reportedly teared up watching Lang perform his song while watching the Juno awards (Canadian music awards) on TV. The Scottish poet, Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759 in the “auld cley biggin” that is now known as Burns Cottage. His birth is celebrated today throughout the world as Burns Night, with Burns Suppers, poems and songs.
There will be many dinners tonight to celebrate the world’s most famous Scot, Robbie Burns, a poet whose song Auld Lang Syne is one of the most popular songs in the English-speaking world, up there with Happy Birthday and For he’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
M.W. Turner’s 1822 painting, The Battle of Trafalgar
My dad Jack Haliburton’s side of the family were Scots whose family can be traced back to the 1400s to Lord Walter Haliburton, who owned a castle in Dirleton, Scotland. My mother’s family, who were from the Isle of Arran in Scotland, were given land in Canada (what is now New Brunswick) to reward them for fighting in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 with Lord Nelson; the famous ship battle defeated the French-Spanish fleet, which lost twenty-two ships, without a single British vessel being lost.
My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth ;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Farewell to the mountains, high-cover'd with snow,
Farewell to the straths and green vallies below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.
My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Now that the Christmas rush is over — I painted dozens of shirts for customers who wanted to give them as unique gifts — I’ve spent the last few weeks painting some new shirts.
Here are a few I painted for customers for Christmas, plus others I painted more recently:

Today’s music is Gotye singing Somebody That I used to Know; the video features some cool body painting:Gotye’s (pronounced gott-tee-ay) real name is Wouter De Backer. His friends call him Wally. He was born in Bruges, Belgium but moved to Australia with his family when he was two years old. He explained to Sound on Sound magazine how he struggled with writing the song, which started with his sampling the guitar of Brazilian jazz guitarist Luiz Bonfá’s 1967 instrumental song “Seville”:
“Writing ‘Somebody’ was a gradual and linear process. I started with the Luiz Bonfa sample, then I found the drums, and after that I started working on the lyric and the melody, and added the wobbly guitar-sample melody. After that, I took a break, and a few weeks later I came back to the session and decided on the chorus chord progression, wrote the chorus melody, and combined that with sounds like the Latin loop and some of the percussion and the flute sounds that further filled the space. At that point I hit a brick wall. I was thinking: ‘This is pretty good, how can I get to the end really quickly?’ and I was trying to take lazy decisions to finish the song. I considered repeating the chorus, an instrumental bridge, a change in tempo or key, I even considered finishing the song after the first chorus. But nothing felt like it was strong enough. So the third session was all about writing the female part and changing the perspective. The arrangement of ‘Somebody’ is reflective of me moving towards using sounds that provide me with inspiration for a texture or a platform for an idea, and then through sonic manipulation and coming up with original melodies and harmonic ideas to make it my own. I guess the balance of sounds taken from records and samples I created myself is perhaps 50-50.”
He eventually used Kimbra, a New Zealand recording artist, to sing the female vocal. At the moment, Gotye’s song has been viewed more than 470 million times on YouTube. The most watched video is Gangnam Style by Korean guy Psy, which now has more than 1.8 billion views, surpassing the 971 million views of Baby by Canadian Justin Bieber.
Todd Rundgren wrote and sang some great songs in the early 1970s: Hello It’s Me, I Saw the Light, Can We Still be Friends. And more recently, Bang on the Drum.
A couple of years ago, he performed in New York City wearing a Desigual T-shirt (far left) that was designed by the company owner, Thomas Meyer. Here’s a video of that show:On Aug. 1, 2018, Todd released this video, which shows Todd’s drummer wearing a Desigual monkey shirt:
Todd currently lives on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where he performed I Saw the Light and It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference with Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates) at Todd’s house:Here’s another song performed at Daryl’s House, Can We Still be Friends: Rundgren engineered and produced a bunch of hit albums: Stage Fright for The Band, Straight Up by Badfinger, We’re an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf, New York Dolls by New York Dolls, Skylarking by XTC. But it was the Meat Loaf record that allowed him to buy his place in Hawaii. Hello It’s Me is still one of my favourites:
His latest recording is State. His website is here. And Todd wearing the Desigual shirt:
