A break from commercialism: The Stranglers videos… Golden Brown, Always the Sun, Skin Deep; plus Patti Smith, Springsteen & Neil Young

We’re taking a break from commercialism today to bring you a video of Golden Brown by The Stranglers, a favourite late ’70s to early ’80s British band that opened for the first British tours of American punks The Ramones and Patti Smith. We called it New Wave, but they arose from the punk scene.

Guitarist-vocalist Hugh Cornwall said of the song: The lyrics were about heroin and a girl of Mediterranian origin — her skin was golden brown.

We just got this top in yesterday and a couple from Chicago bought two today. They said they had been talking about the top on their way to Vancouver. It’s been a real hit with kids.

Platform shoes making a comeback?

platform.barcelona.wwdPlatform shoes seem to be making a comeback in Barcelona, looking at the latest photos posted on the WWD website.

They were also seen recently on the streets of Tokyo during fashion week there.

Or maybe platforms never really died off — somewhere in the world, another group is trying to revive the style.

After all, it was the ancient Greeks who first wore platform shoes on the stage to raise the importance of the star characters. But for some, they are the ultimate symbol of the disco era of the 1970s.

Had enough rain? Here are some rainy day distractions….

Okay, so it rained heavily all day in Vancouver yesterday. And it wasn’t 97 degrees like it was in Palm Springs.

So here are some photos to brighten your day, which are from a new online all-digital art magazine, Installation, The one in the middle is a human sculpture using layers of paper stuck together, which can be pulled apart, as shown below.

The painting at the bottom is by Michelle Forsyth. It reminds me of this painting  (Mirror  113) by my friend Gary Lang — we both went to Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in the 1960s;  the painting was shown in 2009 at the Ace Gallery. I phoned Gary this week to wish him a happy birthday. He’s a great painter, a good father and husband.Here is a film about his most recent paintings:
