Puff Daddy, who wrote the song as a tribute to his late friend Notorious B.I.G., didn’t obtain the rights to use the guitar sample (by Andy Summers) from the 1983 hit Police song, Every Breath You Take, which was written by Sting. CBC Music named Aganaba’s “Sugar,” from her 2019 album Something Comfortable, one of the most underrated songs of the year. I started selling handpainted T-shirts in 1973 after graduating from the Chouinard Institute of Art in Los Angeles, which later became CalArts. Some Angel creations were sold at Bloomingdales in New York. I also taught high school art for four years. The other art teacher and I quit the same day. We loved the students but we decided we couldn’t take teaching any more. Teaching is tough job and it adversely affected my health.
I took a part-time job serving beer at Jerry’s Cove pub (now called The Cove) and sold my handpainted shirts at the small store next door, which was run by the pub owner’s wife. One day, the pub owner asked me if I wanted to take over the store next door – he told me had an hour to decide. The rent was $200 a month.
I went for it and opened Angel Handpainted Fashions in 1978. A few years later, Angel moved to Broadway and then in the early 1980s we opened on Robson Street.
As the rents on Robson skyrocketed, I decided to move Angel to Gastown in 1998, to our current location on the southeast corner of Carrall and Powell in Maple Tree Square.
I’m still painting shirts, mostly custom orders today. Almost 10 years ago, I began selling the Barcelona-based Desigual clothing line, which had similar origins as Angel: Thomas Meyer, the owner of Desigual, started painting T-shirts on the island of Ibiza in Spain and founded the company in 1984 in Barcelona. Desigual now has stores around the world.

Vancouver rocker Bryan Adams, whose Warehouse recording studio is a block east of our store, released a new Christmas video earlier this month:
Here’s Bob Dylan‘s version of the same song, a polka with something rarely seen – Bob dancing at a raucous house party. Bob inserts the names of 10 U.S. presidents while naming off Santa’s reindeer (originally there were eight reindeer in the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, more commonly known as The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore, an American Professor of Oriental and Greek Literature in New York City who made a fortune subdividing an inherited estate in the district that now is known as Chelsea). Rudolph the red-nosed ninth reindeer was a 20th century invention, spawned by the 1949 song by the singing cowboy Gene Autry.
This is a new Christmas song, released this week by Los Lobos, who recently did a Tiny Desk Concert, performing songs from their first Christmas album, Llegó Navidad. I first saw Los Lobos in the early 1980s at the Savoy nightclub above my Gastown store (now called The Diamond). This is Ellie Goulding singing a live version on BBC earlier this month of the Joni Mitchellclassic River:

Angel is located at No. 2 Powell Street in the Gastown district of Vancouver, Canada. We’re on the corner of Powell & Carrall Street in Maple Tree Square, where Vancouver began. The historic photo (left) shows what the location of my store looked like in 1886 (click on photo to enlarge).
This a new song by Robbie Robertson. Remembrance plays during the final credits for The Irishman, the new Netflix picture by Martin Scorsese, who recently made a fabulous doc about Robertson, detailing the years as Bob Dylan‘s band and with Ronnie Hawkins, until they quit touring with Dylan and set up a studio in the basement of a pink house in Woodstock, New York, which begat Music From Big Pink. Here’s another of Robbie’s songs, the theme for The Irishman – the three-hour-plus movie features Sopranos actor and Bruce Springsteen bandmate Little Steven Van Zandt singing Spanish Harlem in an Italian nightclub.
