Angel is located at No. 2 Powell Street in the Gastown district of Vancouver, Canada. We’re  on the corner of Powell & Carrall Street in Maple Tree Square, where Vancouver began. The historic photo (left) shows what the location of my store looked like in 1886 (click on photo to enlarge).

The music that appears here is free-associative: A friend posted on Facebook a Top 20 list from a Vancouver radio station in 1969 – 50 years ago. No. 28 on the list was this song — Baby It’s You by a band called SMITH:

So that leads to my thinking about the Beatles version, with a 22-year-old John Lennon singing with authority and a touch a vulnerability:

The remastered version in 2009 moved the instruments to the front and the vocals further back. Lennon still kills the song:

The music was written by Burt Bacharach, the lyrics were by Mack David along with co-writer/producer Luther Dixon (credited as Barney Williams). This is the original 1961 version by The Shirelles:

The Shirelles had a No. 1 hit the next year, 1962, with Soldier Boy:

The Shirelles were the first “girl group.” My first heartbreak, this was the soundtrack:

So the Shirelles begat The Chiffons, Even Berry Gordy took notice and created The Supremes.

I see that blues-rocker  Gary Clark Jr. has a Vancouver concert scheduled for Sept. 10th,  which has been moved from the PNE Forum to Malkin Bowl (an outdoors venue located in Stanley Park). Catfish Blues, live, has influences of Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy:

Psychedelic rock pioneer Roky Erickson, 71, died recently. He was the lead singer of the Texas band, the 13th Floor Elevators. This is a live song from their 1966 debut album:

Dr. John passed away this week. Born Mac Rebennack, he began playing New Orleans clubs at a young age, later becoming a session musician who recorded with such artists as Sonny & Cher, Harry Nilsson, the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Frank Zappa and many others. His first album in 1968, Gris-Gris, was recorded under the name “Dr. John, the Night Tripper.” I remember seeing him perform at the Gardens Auditorium in Vancouver, festooned in feathers, beads and sprinkling the audience with sparkle dust. Mick Jagger announced recently that he had to cancel the Rolling Stones tour of Canada and the U.S. . He had to have a heart valve replaced. Here is a Stones instrumental recorded in 1964 at the legendary Chess Studios, located at 2010 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The Stones took a two-day break from their first U.S. tour, which wasn’t going well — they had been booed off the stage when they played a teen fair in Texas a few days earlier. The Stones didn’t yet have a hit in the U.S. and took a break to record 15 songs at Chess, releasing a five-song EP, 5 x 5, in England on Aug. 14, 1964. They recorded Satisfaction during the Chess sessions, and later added a fuzz-tone guitar. This instrumental, clocking in a 2:02 minutes, was included on the Stones first North American LP, 12 x 5. Keith Richards wrote in his biography that when the Stones first entered the Chess studio, they were surprised to find Muddy Waters painting the ceiling. Muddy also helped the Stones bring their amps in the studio. The song was built around Bill Wyman’s bass riff. And that’s Mick on harmonica @ 1:09.

I first saw the Stones in 1965 in Vancouver – at the Agrodome, with Little Stevie Wonder, then 14 years old, opening.

As you can probably tell, I’m fascinated by remixes. Here’s 4 producers flipping a 12-second sample of jazz improvisation of Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat, played on the piano. The challenge: they had 24 hours to produce a song.

Elton John, now 71, will be playing three concerts in Vancouver in September in what is being billed as his Final Tour (Bill Wyman calls it the “final Farewell-Good-bye-I’m-Retiring-I-Really-Mean-It Tour.” Here was John’s first hit from 1970:

John is married to Canadian David Furnish – they met in London in 2005 when Furnish was working at an ad agency. They entered into a civil partnership in 2005 and in 2014, when England legalized same-sex marriage, they officially wed and now have two sons. In 2005, one of John’s early mentors and former roommates, legendary British blues rocker Long John Baldry died in Vancouver, where he had lived for 25 years. Elton, who was Reginald Dwight when he  played keyboards with Baldry’s band Bluesology in the 1960s, credited Baldry for convincing John (they were both gay), at the last minute, not to marry a woman in the 1970s. John wrote this song about how Baldry saved him that night:

This movie did a beautiful integration of an Elton John song:

  Almost Famous was written by Cameron Crowe. It’s an autobiographical account of his early years, being a 15-year-old music critic writing for Rolling Stone magazine and touring in 1973 with bands such as the Allman Brothers – called Stillwater in the movie. The movie clip ends with his college-professor mother Elaine, played by Frances McDormand, telling her class: “Rock stars have kidnapped my son.” Crowe’s mentor in the movie is music critic Lester Bangs, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. They have a phone conversation about how uncool they are – “not like good-looking people,” Bangs explains.

The owner of Desigual, Thomas Meyer, created the design for these earrings – anatomically correct male and female robots – when he painted T-shirts on the island of Ibiza in 1984. You’ll see the robots this season on other styles from the Spring-Summer 2019 collection.

Today’s music is Aloe Blacc singing I Need A Dollar. He might be best known for his vocals on the late Avicci’s massive hit Wake Me Up. A’s breakout electro-house single came in 2009 with Ryu.

Like horns? This is a Seattle band, the True Loves (you’ll recognize the drummer and guitarist from another Seattle band, D-Lo 3, aka the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio).

And lastly, here’s a video by Canadian band Walk Off The Earth, who lost a band member this week: Mike Taylor, known as the mysterious Beard Man, died in his sleep last month, of natural causes He was also father of two teenagers, a hockey coach and business owner. He was only 51. This is the band’s tribute to him:

This is how the band became famous, but tried a reprise without Beard Man, replaced by the incredibly talented Scott Helman; Sarah Blackwood (the blonde) was 8 months pregnant & went into labour during the filming of this video:

This is a Vancouver alt-country trio,  Be Good Tanyas, singing a Townes Van Zandt song recorded in 2011, Waiting Around To Die. Listen to it as loud as you can.  I used to work with the mother of one of these young ladies, who was a popular newspaper columnist at The Vancouver Sun:
