Today’s music is a new song recorded by 1960s country music star Glen Campbell. It’s also his final song — the Country Music Hall of Famer is struggling with Alzheimer’s Disease and now is in a care home. The video for the song, I’m Not Going to Miss You, mixes home movies, some career highlights and performance footage, and his doctor explaining the results of a brain scan to Glen and his wife of 32 years, Kim:
Here’s Glen singing Witchita Lineman:
The song was written by Jimmy Webb, who also wrote this hit for Campbell, Galveston, which was about a soldier in Vietnam longing for his love and home in Texas:
Campbell was a great guitar picker, who worked as a studio musician in his early days, playing with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, the Righteous Brothers, and the Monkees. He played with a legendary group of Los Angeles session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew, When Beach Boys member Brian Wilson dropped out of touring, Campbell played guitar on the road with the band in 1965 and can be heard on the album Pet Sounds. Two years later, he had his first hit with a faster version of John Hartford‘s song, Gentle On My Mind:
Here’s Campbell singing another Jimmy Webb song, By the Time I Get to Phoenix:
And finally, here’s Michael Stipe of REM and Patti Smith singing (slightly off-key) Witchita Lineman at a New Year’s Eve party three years ago:
