New Desigual arrivals for Spring-Summer 2014

We received a new Desigual shipment this week that included a vest for women in two colours: pink and green. The latter is perfect for Celtic Fest celebrations this weekend in Vancouver, including the Blarney Stone pub’s three-day Paddy Weekend, which will feature Irish dancing and music on Carrall Street in front of my store starting at noon Saturday March 15.

The new video above is by Spanish indie singer-songwriter Anni B Sweet, who first gained notice when she did a folk-pop version of a 1985 song Take on Me, written by Norwegian pop group a-ha. Ani’s real name is Ana López. Today’s music video is by Irishman Van Morrision, singing Brown Eyed Girl:Van was born in Belfast. He was the lead singer of the early Sixties group Them, which had hits in 1964 with Gloria (with Jimmy Page brought in as a session musician to play guitar) and Baby Please Don’t Go. In 1967, he recorded his first solo album, which included Brown Eyed Girl, still one of the most popular songs released during the Summer of Love. Baby Please Don’t Go is a classic blues song listed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” It was first recorded by Big Joe Williams in 1935. Here is a live version with Muddy Waters, who invites a young Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on stage to perform 33 years ago:Muddy Waters, whose real name was McKinley Morganfield, died two years later, in 1983, at the age of 70. He and Candy recorded the instrumental for the soundtrack of the Dutch film De Kassière. She used to play with Prince, who once said: “”When I want good sax, I call Candy.”

Today’s music video is Big Yellow Taxi by Counting Crows, featuring Vanessa Carlton:The 1970 song is a classic written by Canadian music icon Joni Mitchell, who supposedly wrote it in Greece after she noticed a beautiful spot had been paved over and a pink hotel erected. The song is a lament for the loss of things that could have been, including the relationship that seemingly ended with the “big yellow taxi” leaving with Joni’s boyfriend.

Czech model wearing Desigual named best-dressed at New York Fashion Week

Czech model Karolína Kurková was named the best-dressed woman at this year’s New York Fashion Week by Harper’s Bazaar magazine. Ranked Number 3 was American actress Dakota Fanning, whom I painted a shirt for when she was 11.

Michael Olajide Jr. is a fan of Desigual & Angel Vancouver

Former Vancouver super middleweight boxer Michael Olajide Jr. dropped by Angel Vancouver on the weekend and bought an Angel hand-painted cat tank top and a Desigual dress called Valentin.

He has been in my store before and I asked him if we was in town visiting his mother. He was, he said.

Michael now lives in New York, where he runs a gym he co-founded called Aerospace NYC. His client list includes Brazilian fashion supermodel Adriana Lima, who has walked the catwalk wearing clothing from Desigual’s Spring-Summer 2014 collection, which just arrived at Angel.

Michael is a personal trainer who uses no fitness machines. Instead he uses shadow boxing and skip ropes to get models in “fighting shape” so they can fit into sample sizes for the fashion show runway. He’s been working with Adriana Lima for seven years.
