Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot died this week. This is one of his classics, If You Could Read My Mind:
This is recorded at Gordon Lightfoot’s house in Toronto, during Bob Dylan‘s Rolling Thunder Revue tour; Joni Mitchell calls out chord changes to Dylan and Roger McGuinn (from The Byrds); it was her first performance of Coyote, written about her affair with actor/playwright Sam Shepard:
Tina Turner, The Queen of Rock, died this week. Vancouver rocker Bryan Adams wrote this song for Tina back in the early 1980s; Bryan revered Tina and she loved him – she invited him to play at her wedding. He was also forever grateful for touring as Tina’s opening act in Europe, where he was unknown at the time. It opened a whole new world for him. I sometimes see Bryan walk by my store – his Warehouse recording studio is a block away.
I like songs with whistling; I also love Taj Mahal. I like whistling along to this song when I’m alone:
Early Rolling Stones, written in L.A., unimpressed with their record company promo man:
This is Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix right after he recorded it in England in 1967, the Summer of Love:
And here he is performing the song a few months later at the Monterey Pop Festival in California:
This song was banned in many countries because of heavy breathing and sexual content. Serge wrote the song for Bridgett Bardot, but she thought it was too sexy
My favourite Leonard Cohen track:
I know I need a small vacation, but it don’t look like rain…
One New Year’s Eve, this surprise guest tried to sing Wichita Lineman with Patti Smith:
